Boogertman + Partners are pleased to announce that we have officially selected the winner of the annual Boogertman + Partners Architectural Design Scholarship Award Africa 2017.

Over the past year, we have communicated this prestigious scholarship to all relevant tertiary institutions both in South Africa and the greater continent. This year, we asked the Heads of Department and Design Lecturers at these participating institutions to select their top students to submit their portfolios as entries. From this massive selection of creative design ability, our panel of judges shortlisted five finalists whom we believe are the top architectural talent in Africa, and invited these finalists to join the Boogertman + Partners team for three days to take part in the Boogertman + Partners Design Challenge, in order to select the winner of this award.

On Wednesday, the 27th of September 2017, the finalists met the Boogertman + Partners team at our Johannesburg office where the finalists were given a unique design challenge.

Finalists were introduced to the Metropolis, a semi-fictitious derelict hotel in an urban setting: during an interactive game that was custom designed for this challenge, students were presented with individual personalities, a purpose-driven space, material requirements and spatial attributes that all needed to be incorporated into their design solutions for the refurbishment of this hotel. They were given 48 hours, after which their designs were judged individually according to the communicated criteria.
